United Electric Controls (UEC), a manufacturer of standard and custom-designed solutions for safety, alarm, and emergency shutdown (ESD) functions for OEMs, process, and discrete industries, announced that its ONE Series 1XSW electronic switches are certified SIL 2 / SIL 3 capable.

SIL certification

Global safety certification pioneer, exida, has certified United Electric Controls’ ONE Series for use in a SIL 2 environment, with systematic capability at SIL 3 level.

Adding the ONE Series 1XSW pressure and temperature electronic switch models increases United Electric Controls’ SIL solutions portfolio, including the 120, 100, and 12 Series electromechanical switch lines, and the ONE Series 2SLP Safety Transmitter with high-capacity Safety Relay Output (SRO).

Added reliability

Many had started implementing safety loops but some were simply upgrading instrumentation"

Our customers asked us to pursue SIL certification for our hazardous area electronic switches,” explained Joe Mancini, the Director of Product Marketing at United Electric Controls (UEC).

Joe Mancini adds, “Many had started implementing safety loops but some were simply upgrading instrumentation during plant turnarounds and looking for devices with an added level of reliability assurance.”

Flexibility

Attaining SIL certification for the 1XSW, the only loop-powered electronic switch, allows users added flexibility when designing their safety loops since they can choose to open or close the switch in the alarm state.

The 1XSW is a direct plug-and-play option for upgrading 2-wire electromechanical switches to an electronic platform while allowing for future use if needing to comply with IEC 61508/61511 functional safety requirements.
