Can Europe's cities still make a mobility promise to their inhabitants when the transport sector becomes electric? Berlin, Gothenburg, and Malaga are now testing concepts for a large-scale switch to electric mobility. E.ON is a partner in the projects and is contributing the electromobility component to the various consortia.

As part of the EU's MEISTER funding project from the Horizon 2020 program, E.ON is gathering insights into the technical challenges and business models that promise success for electric mobility providers in cities.

It tests concepts for e-car sharing, the expansion of charging infrastructure in large residential areas, and the operation and conversion of municipal bus fleets from diesel to electric.

EU MEISTER project

The aim of the EU MEISTER project is to reduce costs with intelligent charging infrastructure and to facilitate access to charging points for customers. To this end, platforms and services will be developed that simplify the use of electric mobility and optimize the energy supply to vehicles. EU funding for the Berlin project partners amounts to around €2.1 million.

The Berlin consortium has now started the state-owned residential construction project “WATERKANT Berlin”. The pilot project on the banks of the Oberhavel in the Spandau district will consist of around 2,500 apartments by 2024.

The topic of mobility has played a central role in the development of the quarter from the very beginning. Tenants are provided with innovative mobility offers such as e-car sharing with the easiest possible access to charging stations.

“WATERKANT Berlin” is owned by state-owned housing companies Gewobag and WBM

The EU project MEISTER is accompanied by the Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Transport, and Climate Protection and brings major players together: E.ON is developing an intelligent charging infrastructure with charging and load management. This will also be used in Gothenburg and Malaga.

As an industrial partner, the company supports the intelligent connection between charging stations and the power grid with the E.ON Drive electromobility platform.

“WATERKANT Berlin” is owned by state-owned housing companies Gewobag and WBM. Siemens subsidiary VMZ Berlin Betriebsgesellschaft, as the operator of the Berlin traffic information center and the e-mobility authentication platform, is the pilot project in Berlin, developing new digital information and booking services and integrating them into its Berlin mobility platform.

IKEM

Independent research institute IKEM – Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility – analyzes and develops the legal framework for the implementation of the new business models. The institute also evaluates the goals set by the MEISTER pilots. E.ON is an important partner of the EU for the development of electric mobility in Europe.

In addition to the Meister project, E.ON is implementing a network of around 180 electric filling stations on Europe's motorways where vehicles can be charged at ultra-fast speeds. The network will extend from Norway to Italy. The construction is also supported by the EU.
