Scolmore is continually investing in new and improved products for its wiring accessories portfolio and has just added three new RCD socket outlets to the range.  A 13A 2-gang Type A passive RCD switched socket outlet, a 13A 2 gang IP66 weatherproof Type A passive RCD switched socket outlet and a 13A 2-gang Metal Clad Type A passive RCD switched socket outlet are now included in the company’s Essentials wiring accessories collection.

An RCD is a sensitive safety device that switches off electricity automatically if there is a fault. It is designed to protect against the risks of electrocution and fire caused by earth faults, by constantly monitoring the current flow through one or more circuits it is used to protect. If it detects current flow down an unintended path, such as through a person who has touched a live part, the RCD will disconnect within the set time of the device, significantly reducing the risk of death or serious injury.

Passive RCDs

Scolmore’s new RCD sockets are socket-outlets with an RCD built into them which can be used in place of a standard socket-outlet. These are known as passive RCDs which means that when power is lost due to a fault the RCD disconnects and isolates the piece of equipment it is protecting. Passive RCDs do not trip during power cuts.  They are also known as Latching RCDs.

Fixed RCDs are installed in the consumer unit and can provide protection to individual or groups of circuits

This type of RCD provides protection only to the person in contact with equipment, including its lead, plugged into the RCD socket-outlet. Fixed RCDs, on the other hand, are installed in the consumer unit and can provide protection to individual or groups of circuits.

Aquip66

The 13A 2-gang Type A passive RCD switched socket outlet can provide a retro fit solution for those domestic dwellings with no RCD devices. The 13A 2 gang double IP66 weatherproof Type A passive RCD switched socket outlet, which comes under the company’s Aquip66 weatherproof range, is suitable for outdoor use.

The new RCD sockets are manufactured using Urea Formaldehyde, which has similar inherent properties to antimicrobial additives that inhibit the growth of some infectious diseases.
