The city of Saarburg has extensively modernized the historic hydroelectric power plant from 1936 in the basement of the museum. 

The historic main attraction of Saarburg, the waterfall, is generating sustainable energy again using the renovated power plant for its consumption in the museum and further use in the region.

Surplus amounts are fed into the power grid. In addition, the plant is once again accessible and accessible to visitors.

The city received financial support for the general renovation from, among others, the infrastructure service provider - Westenergie. Representatives of the city of Saarburg and Westenergie came together on-site to get an idea of ​​the modernized attraction.

"The use of water and water power was of great importance for the development of Saarburg. The hydroelectric power plant in Saarburg is also particularly close to Westenergie's heart, because we operated the plant through our predecessor companies between 1936 and 1997," explains Marco Felten, Westenergie's Head of the Trier region.

He adds, "It was, therefore, a matter of honor for us to support the ambitious project to modernize this historic gem."

From 1936 onwards, the hydroelectric power station was used primarily to supply energy to street lighting.

Westenergie is responsible for operating and modernizing the street lighting in partnership with the city of Saarburg. The contracts for this were recently extended until 2035.
