On May 25, 2018, Canada's 735 kV Chibougamau series compensation upgrade project undertaken by NR completed all field & commissioning tests without delay and successfully put into operation.

Fundamentally, series compensators were installed in the 1990s in the Chibougamau Substation close to the James Bay Area by another supplier, its control and protection system has reached the end of its life span and the replacement of outdated spare parts is highly required.

NR series compensators projects

NR 735kV Chibougamau system is an important project for Quebec to improve the power transmission capacity of hydropower. The modernization of the control & protection system is expected to significantly improve the grid reliability and help reduce maintenance needs.

NR provides well-proven key equipment with separate intellectual effects rights for this project

NR provides well-proven key equipment with independent intellectual property rights for this project, such as protection & control systems, gap trigger systems, measuring systems, and fiber signal columns.

In strict accordance with the Quebec electricity and technical requirements of the series compensation control protection system, NR also carries out optical fiber signal column-type experiments as required. Passed all strict factory tests, field & commissioning tests, NR series compensators project’s all technical indicators meet the requirements of Hydro-Québec (HQ) and have been highly evaluated.

Field-proven HVDC & FACTS solutions

Series compensation is a cutting-edge technology that can reduce transfer reactance, and increase the transient and voltage stability in transmission systems, most notably in bulk transmission corridors. This technology is part of NR's family of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) solutions that increase the capacity & reliability of existing transmission networks and contribute to the development of smart grids.

NR offers field-proven HVDC & FACTS solutions to solve reliability and efficiency problems in power systems. The complete HVDC & FACTS solution, along with high-quality equipment, will help to increase transfer capacity and ensure the quality of the next-generation smart grid.
