Volodymyr Groysman, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, took part in a meeting with Ukrainian tech industry representatives at GlobalLogic’s Kyiv office. The meeting was focused on the Ukrainian IT industry's prospects in the near future.

First, during an office tour, the Prime Minister learned about the tech solutions that are being created by Ukrainian engineers. GlobalLogic experts showcased their latest software developments in telecommunications, media, automotive, and other fields.

Highly-skilled professionals

According to research conducted by PwС in 2017, software development as an export generated more than $3.6 BN of currency earnings for Ukraine, which is 3.34% of the country's GDP.

Igor Byeda, SVP & Managing Director of GlobalLogic Ukraine and the President of IT Ukraine Association, said, "The IT market is one of the most fast-paced in terms of growth in Ukraine. In 2017, the industry demonstrated a 20% growth rate equal to the pre-crisis period. Yet, to maintain this stable and fast growth, the most important goal is to have a respective increase in the quantity of engineering talents. Today, there are about 120,000 highly-skilled professionals. According to projections, during the current year, their contribution to the economy will grow up to $4.5 BN."

Development of engineering talent

The key issue of the discussion was the development of engineering talent in Ukraine

Within the meeting, the Prime Minister and key IT market players within the IT Ukraine Association discussed the scope of tasks that must be fulfilled to help the Ukrainian IT industry reinforce its global market position.

The key issue of the discussion was the development of engineering talent in Ukraine. The country’s IT industry, as well as many foreign tech markets, lacks skilled specialists. This problem can be solved in two ways: (1) by raising a generation of young Ukrainian engineers and (2) by developing a migration policy that is up to the contemporary world’s challenges.

Industry development process

Further growth of the industry will also largely depend on the stability of the business environment in Ukraine. The participants spoke on the importance of keeping current IT business regulations stable for no less than a few years.

Volodymyr Groysman expressed great appreciation for the role of the Ukrainian engineers in the industry development process, stating, "The informational technology field, which grows steadily, may and should be one of the driving forces of the overall economic upturn in Ukraine. Moreover, it is a positive sign of our competitiveness in the global market. In order to win in the competition, further steps in deregulation and talent development should be taken."
