PCS-8351 fast switching fault current limiter developed by NR Electric was officially put into operation, after 168 hours of stable operation in Xinjiang, China on September 25, 2021.

This project solves the problem of excessive short-circuit current caused by centralized transmission of renewables, reduces the impact of short-circuit current on electrical equipment of the main power grid, and improves the flexibility and reliability of power grid regulation.

northwest power grid

In recent years, northwest power grid, as the main base of renewable energy transmission in China, the power grid capacity is increasing.

The expected short-circuit current of many high-voltage substation buses exceeds the breaking capacity of circuit breakers, which poses a threat to the safe and stable operation of the power grid.

multi-disciplinary integration

NR participated in the whole process from the comparison and selection of multiple schemes in the initial stage

NR gives full play to the advantages of multi-disciplinary integration, relies on the rich experience accumulated in the field of system analysis and protection system for many years, and provides a package of solutions for Xinjiang power grid users in combination with the key research and practical application of emerging technologies such as high-voltage AC and DC fast switching.

NR participated in the whole process from the comparison and selection of multiple schemes in the initial stage, the planning of installation and site selection, the analysis of system stability and relay protection impact, to the formulation of the final scheme, and the acceptance and operation of on-site installation and commissioning.

PCS-8351 fault current limiters

Through the installation of PCS-8351 fault current limiters in the first and second lines of 220kV Shixilu respectively, the current limiting reactor is put into operation in case of fault.

The short-circuit current of the 220 kV side bus of the Fenghuang transformer is effectively limited, and the critical problem of excessive short-circuit current is solved, which has been unanimously recognized by users.

modular design

NR PCS-8351 fault current limiter adopts a modular design, which can cover multiple voltage levels from 10kV to 500kV and meet the different current limiting requirements.

It has a simple structure and is compatible with open and enclosed layouts. The maximum breaking current can reach 63kA and the fastest fault response time is less than 10ms.

energy and efficiency

No harmful gas is generated during disconnection, which is environment-friendly and maintenance-free

No additional system loss is added during steady-state operation of the system, to save energy and increase efficiency. In case of fault, the vacuum breaker is tripped, and the current-limiting reactor is quickly put into operation to limit the short-circuit current.

No harmful gas is generated during disconnection, which is environment-friendly and maintenance-free.

practical and innovative solution

After the fault is cleared, it will automatically reclose and restore the lossless operation state to minimize the impact on the system.

The successful application of PCS-8351 fault current limiter in the Xinjiang power grid highlights the position of NR fast switching products in the field of high-voltage power grid and provides a practical and innovative solution to the increasingly prominent problem of power grid short-circuit current exceeding the limit.
