In March 2019, three sets of high-voltage Magnetically Controlled Shunt Reactor (MCSR) of NR were successfully put into operation in WACO KUNGO substation of LAÚCA–HUAMBO 400kV project in south kwanza province, Angola.

NR MCSR can effectively guarantee the safety and stability of transmission lines, marking another major breakthrough of NR in the field of flexible AC transmission.

High operating voltage

WACO KUNGO 400kV substation is an important hub connecting the power grid in northern, central and southern Angola. The total length of the LAÚCA–HUAMBO 400kV transmission line is about 400km. Due to the capacitance rise effect, there will be a high operating voltage with the line put into operation, which seriously affects the safe and stable operation of the power grid.

By installing the MCSR system, the voltage difference at the starting terminal and ending terminal of the line can be effectively reduced, the power supply area can be increased and the power quality can be improved; as a result, the living electricity consumption and sustainable economic development of local residents can be effectively guaranteed.

Increasing transfer capacity

NR provides 5 sets of high-voltage MCSR equipment for this project. 1 set of 400kV/30MVar and 2 sets of 400kV/40MVar installed in KUNGO substation; in addition, another 1 set of 400kV/40MVar and 1 set of 400kV/60MVar installed in DANGO substation.

NR provides a total solution for this system, including design, system simulation analysis, MCSR equipment with protection & control system. After site acceptance test, reactive power response time is far less than 300ms.. All key technical indexes of the system fully meet the requirements of the contract and reach the international level.

NR offers field-proven HVDC & FACTS solutions to solve reliability and efficiency problems in power system. The complete HVDC & FACTS solution will help to increase transfer capacity and ensure quality of your next-generation smart grid.
