On March 29, 2022, the DC back-to-back project in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Bay Area (hereinafter referred to as Guangzhou Project) which lasted 15 months was successfully put into operation.

The Guangzhou project put into operation this time adopts the new generation flexible DC transmission system of NR, including flexible DC protection & control, measurement, phase selection closing and opening devices, as well as flexible direct converter valve and other core equipment on the east side of Guangzhou.

Future grid construction

The Guangzhou Project and the Greater Bay Area DC back-to-back Dongguan project under construction (hereinafter referred to as the Dongguan project) are both important parts of the future grid construction in Guangdong.

DC back-to-back series projects in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Greater Bay Area

The DC back-to-back series projects in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Greater Bay Area have added a "firewall" to the power grid in the East and West of the Greater Bay Area.

After completion, it can further optimize the grid structure of the Guangdong power grid, avoid large-scale power outages and ensure the power safety of the Greater Bay Area.

Large-scale consumption of renewable energy

At the same time, the project can fundamentally solve the problem of excessive short-circuit current of the Guangdong power grid, reduce the risk of multiple DC connection points, lay a good foundation for the subsequent large-scale consumption of renewable energy, and help to achieve the goal of "carbon peaking and carbon neutralization".

NR project team has deeply studied the special needs, operation, and maintenance characteristics

Since the implementation of the project, the NR project team has deeply studied the special needs, operation, and maintenance characteristics of back-to-back DC projects, and has conducted scientific research on the overall system optimization of measurement control protection valve control full link delay, back-to-back DC asynchronous control, on-site efficient test of converter valve and its friendly power grid access performance.
