November 8, 2021, the first wind turbine of Jiangsu Rudong Offshore Wind Farm was successfully put into operation through flexible DC transmission, opening a new era in China of offshore wind power to transmission through flexible DC transmission, marking the successful application of NR flexible DC protection & control system in offshore wind power project.

Rudong wind power project is the first offshore wind power flexible DC transmission project in Asia undertaken by the Three Gorges Group and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group.

NR provided a complete set of protection & control systems, measurement systems, integrated monitoring, AC protection, fault recording, substation monitoring, online monitoring, power quality monitoring, infrared temperature measurement, cyber security, and other complete sets of secondary systems and measurement equipment.

offshore operation & maintenance

Since the implementation of the project, NR has deeply studied the complex operating conditions of offshore wind power flexible DC transmission project, the unique characteristics and requirements of fault ride through an offshore operation & maintenance, developed the flexible DC protection & control system with high performance, compactness, and high anti marine corrosion.

Island adaptive control and oscillation suppression strategy are proposed, which effectively solve the problem of high-frequency oscillation in renewable grid connections.

The rotation switching strategy of wind farms solves the problems of single and double-branch conversion

In addition, the online switching strategy of offshore double branches and the rotation switching strategy of wind farms solve the problems of single and double branch conversion of flexible DC transformers and overload of converters, enhancing the operation reliability and access friendliness.

To meet the special needs of unattended offshore converter stations, NR developed the direct integrated monitoring system, which realized the integrated comprehensive monitoring of offshore wind farms, AC substations, and flexible DC main and auxiliary control system, realizing the comprehensive monitoring and full-dimensional display of systems and equipment. It significantly improves the operation & maintenance efficiency of offshore wind power flexible DC transmission projects.

The grid connection and operation of the first unit of Rudong offshore wind power is just the beginning, and more wind turbines will be connected to the grid in succession.

NR's renewable generation flexible DC transmission system, with its friendly grid access performance, will escort more large-scale wind power in the future.
