On November 28, 2020, the Static VAR Compensator (SVC) supplied by NR Electric, was successfully put into operation in ‘220kV BA’ER substation’ of Ali power network project.

It has become one of the highest SVC systems in the world, and it is also the successful application of SVC project in extremely weak power grid, which has great engineering significance.

The transmission lines of Tibet power grid are long and the network structure is weak

The transmission lines of Tibet power grid are long and the network structure is weak. The transmission capacity and short-circuit capacity of the power grid change greatly in the wet and dry season, resulting in the voltage fluctuation of the power grid.

Ali power grid belongs to the terminal power grid of Tibet and the grid structure is particularly weak.

A small disturbance will cause voltage fluctuation of tens of kV in power grid, which may cause insulation damage of equipment, even lead to voltage collapse or grid disconnection.

SVC to play key role in stabilizing terminal grid voltage

After SVC is put into operation, it plays an important role in stabilizing terminal grid voltage, increasing system damping, rapidly providing voltage and reactive power support, accelerating voltage recovery and playing an important role in the safe & stable operation of Tibet power grid.

Extremely weak current network has great challenge to SVC control strategy and performance. SVC too fast response may cause power grid oscillation; too slow response cannot meet the control speed and the role of voltage & reactive power support in case of fault.

NR SVC solution offers gain monitoring and optimization

NR SVC solution has the function of gain monitoring and optimization

NR SVC solution has the function of gain monitoring and optimization. It can’t only ensure fast response speed in extremely weak system, but also can’t cause system oscillation. It has high adaptability for extreme weak current network and occasions with large short-circuit capacity change.

This SVC is located in 220kV BA’ER substation. The environment is extremely bad, the altitude of the station is 4688m, the minimum temperature is - 40 ℃, the temperature difference between day and night is 25 ℃, the extremely low temperature, strong ultraviolet radiation, strong wind and sand weather bring great challenges to the engineering design.

NR SVC system applied in high altitude

In addition, the air in high altitude area is thin and the climate is bad, so NR has set up a project team with excellent engineering and management experience. It evaluated every stage of project design, construction and commissioning and the delivery of the system with high quality, which is highly recognized by the customer.

The successful commission of this project is a benchmark for NR SVC system applied in high altitude and weak grid. NR offers field proven FACTS solution to solve reliability and efficiency problems in power system. The complete FACTS solution will help to increase transfer capacity and ensure quality of your next generation smart grid.
