On April 20, 2021, NR Electric has successfully energized the SVC project of MAN station in West Africa. Four West African countries (Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea) cross-border electricity link (Abbreviated as “CLSG”), starts from MAN station in Cote d’Ivoire, passes through Liberia and Sierra Leone, and ends at Linsan station in Guinea.
The project connects 12 substations in four countries, with a total length of 1303 km. The CLSG project will support economic development, reduce the need to use expensive generators and allow existing and future hydropower projects to benefit the region. NR was chosen to provide three of the four sets of SVC, protection devices and integrated automation systems for the power interconnection projects of the four countries in West Africa.
Improving transmission capacity
SVC is the abbreviation of Static Var Compensator (SVC). It can improve transmission capacity, stabilize terminal system voltage, improve system transient stability, enhance power system damping and suppress power oscillation.
MAN station in Cote d'Ivoire will play an important role in system voltage stability
As the starting station of CLSG project, MAN station in Cote d'Ivoire will play an important role in system voltage stability, improving system stability and ensuring power transmission in later period after its SVC system is put into operation.
NR has provided an overall EPC solution for the project, from preliminary survey to complete design, from equipment procurement to civil construction, from electrical installation to commissioning.
Project delivery capabilities
Voltage instability has existed in West Africa for a long time. The successful operation of this project has significantly improved the power quality of west coast of Africa, and the engineering achievements have been highly praised by users. SVC project of MAN station in Cote d'Ivoire is the first large-scale EPC project undertaken by NR in West Africa.
The successful operation of the project indicates that NR has a comprehensive package of project delivery capabilities in the field of power electronics in West Africa region.
