On November 16, 2020, The LIKOMA station (1MW) of the 1.3MW island photovoltaic energy storage microgrid EPC project in Malawi, Africa was successfully put into operation by NR. The Minister of Energy-Malawi and the CEO of the Electricity Generation Company-Malawi were present to congratulate the project.

The project is located on two isolated islands (Likoma and Chizumulu) in Lake Malawi, with a total design photovoltaic capacity of 1.3MW and energy storage capacity of 2839kWh.

Intermittent power supply

In the past, diesel generators have been used to maintain intermittent power supply in the island. After this project was put into operation, it is the first time to realize 24-hour uninterrupted power supply in the whole island, which is of great significance to assist the economic development of Malawi and improve the living condition of local people.

The project is also the first photovoltaic energy storage power station in Malawi. NR delivered the overall EPC solution for the project, and is responsible for the overall survey, design, procurement, civil construction, installation and commissioning.

Converging NR technology

The project team fully assesses the risks and formulates the response plan through on-the-spot investigation

Among them, PCS series protection & control products, PV inverter, power conversion system (PCS) and other equipment converging NR technology ensure the stable operation of the microgrid system.

Before the implementation of the project, the project team fully assesses the risks and formulates the response plan through on-the-spot investigation; in the implementation process, it overcomes various difficulties such as climate, transportation and construction on the island.

Important benchmarking significance

During the epidemic period, the on-site project team focused on epidemic prevention and control, and guaranteed the progress of the project on the other hand, and the remote technique support team provided remote guidance and collaborative work, which effectively guaranteed the project's timely operation and won high praise from local customers.

The photovoltaic energy storage microgrid project in Malawi is NR's first microgrid energy storage EPC project in Africa. The successful operation of the project has an important benchmarking significance. NR will be committed to solving practical problems for customers, providing more reliable, economic and environmental protection of renewable microgrid overall solutions.
