NGK INSULATORS, LTD. announced the commissioning of the NAS battery system delivered to the Centre for Energy Research of Hungary, and the handover ceremony was held to celebrate this occasion.
The NAS battery system was ordered through Duna Center Therm Uzemi Szolgaltato Kft., a Hungarian engineering company.
NAS battery
The NAS battery will be used in a demonstration project conducted at the Centre for Energy Research in Hungary to evaluate large stationary storage batteries best suited for stabilizing renewable energy.
In Hungary, where the energy transition to non-fossil fuels is underway toward carbon neutrality, the aim is to achieve both a stable energy supply and carbon neutrality through the application of grid-scale storage batteries.
performance characteristics
The project will be executed in cooperation with MVM Group and data will be shared
The project will be executed in cooperation with MVM Group and data obtained from this demonstration will be shared with MVM, the Hungarian state-owned energy company, and results of the demonstration will be used as a basis for studying performance characteristics for large stationary storage batteries to be introduced in Hungary in the future.
In celebration of the completion of installation and commissioning, a handover ceremony was held at the Centre for Energy Research on July 9th. Government officials and executives from the MVM Group were in attendance, and the State Secretary and others delivered a speech on stage.
solar capacity
"Cooperation in the field of energy is becoming increasingly important. By the beginning of the next decade, the total annual solar capacity of Hungary could be 12,000 megawatts. On some days, Hungary is even able to meet its electricity needs with solar and nuclear power, and sometimes even export," said Mr. Attila Steiner, State Secretary for Energy and Climate at the Ministry of Energy of Hungary.
Mr. Attila Steiner adds, "To meet that situation, NAS batteries are expected to play a crucial role as a new energy storage technology, offering an alternative to lithium-ion batteries."
high-capacity storage batteries
Starting this demonstration, it is expected that NAS batteries will be adopted for similar projects
In Hungary, where the terrain is mostly flat, it is difficult to construct pumped storage hydroelectricity stations, which require an elevation difference, so demand for high-capacity storage batteries such as NAS batteries is increasing as an alternative.
Starting this demonstration, it is expected that NAS batteries will be adopted for similar projects in the future.
various applications
NAS batteries are used in various applications including stabilization of renewable energy, electric power demand, and supply balancing, an alternative to grid expansion, and emergency power sources.
They have so far been installed in over 250 locations around the world and have a stable operational track record of more than 20 years. NGK is continuing to further promote marketing and sales activities for NAS batteries and contribute to the expansion of renewable energy introduction and realization of carbon neutrality globally.
