Mohn Media, a subsidiary of the Bertelsmann Printing Group, has successfully commissioned a waste heat module from Orcan Energy at its site in Gütersloh. It converts the previously unused waste heat on-site into almost 500,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year, increasing the production facility's energy efficiency while reducing its CO2 emissions.

Mohn Media is thus another customer that produces CO2-free electricity from previously unused waste heat as part of the cooperation between Orcan Energy and E.ON and thereby improves its eco-balance.

Organic Rankine Cycle

Orcan Energy is using the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) at the offset-printing plant's existing power plant

Mohn Media is a print service provider in Europe, producing catalogs, brochures, books, and magazines in particular. Environmental and climate protection is especially important in such energy-intensive areas and has been a focus at Mohn Media for decades.

Orcan Energy is using the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) at the offset-printing plant's existing power plant. In the first stage, this will use around one megawatt (MW) of surplus heat in the local heating network to produce electricity.

ORC plant working

In principle, the ORC plant works like a steam power plant: The pressurized working medium is heated and fed to the expander as superheated steam.

The steam drives the expander and thus the generator, which in turn produces electricity. The efficiency of the CHP plant increases. Every year, emissions of almost 300 tons of CO2 are avoided.

optimizing energy use

"Our focus has long been on using energy sparingly and effectively. We see responsible action as the basis for our economic success. With the help of Orcan's waste heat solutions, we have succeeded in further optimizing energy use in our company," says Ralf Niediek, Head of Mohn Media's Energy Center.

Andreas Sichert, CEO of Orcan Energy, says, "We are delighted to have won Mohn Media as a new customer as part of our cooperation with E.ON. Mohn Media traditionally pays a lot of attention to resource-saving activities. With our ORC, the company succeeds in efficiently developing the environmental aspects around production and maximizing its energy potential."

waste heat solutions

We can use waste heat solutions to help our customers like Mohn Media reduce their energy costs"

"Orcan Energy's waste heat solutions are another attractive building block on the sustainability journey for our customers."

"We can now use them to help our industrial and business customers like Mohn Media reduce their energy costs and decarbonize their business on an even broader basis," says Dr. Alexander Fenzl, Head of German Business at E.ON Business Solutions GmbH.

CO2-free and cost-effective electricity

To make greater use of the huge potential of industrial waste heat, E.ON, and Orcan Energy have been offering Orcan's efficient ORC technology in cooperation since the end of last year.

In concrete terms, this means that with Orcan Energy's waste heat solution, E.ON generates CO2-free and cost-effective electricity together with its customers. From planning, installation, and financing to operation and maintenance of the plant, E.ON takes care of the energy supply as a complete, customized package.
