In November 2019, the 60Mvar high-voltage Magnetically Controlled Shunt Reactor (MCSR) of NR was successfully put into operation in Alto Chingo 220kV substation in south Kwanza province, Angola. Alto Chingo 220kV substation is a key hub on the network channel in central and southern Angola.

There were two main problem: light load before networking and over-voltage problems after networking. Through system analysis and research, it is planned to install a set of 60Mvar magnetically controlled controllable shunt reactors (MCSR) on 220kV busbars of the substation to achieve voltage control of the busbars before and after interconnection.

Reactive control response time

In the reactor operation test, the reactive control response time is less than 300ms

NR provides a complete set of MCSR solutions. The scope of work includes system research, complete design, equipment procurement, and field construction. In the reactor operation test, the reactive control response time is less than 300ms, the harmonic content is less than 2%, and the voltage control accuracy is greater than 0.3%.

All key technical indexes of the system fully meet the requirements of the contract and reach the international leading level. The commissioning of the system effectively improved the power quality of the Angolan power grid and met the demand for electricity loads in the southern region.

Increasing transfer capacity

This project was highly evaluated by the Angolan National Transmission Company. NR MCSR can effectively guarantee the safety and stability of transmission lines, marking another major breakthrough of NR in the field of flexible AC transmission.

NR offers field proven HVDC & FACTS solutions to solve reliability and efficiency problems in power system. The complete HVDC & FACTS solution will help to increase transfer capacity and ensure quality of the next-generation smart grid.
