Electric vehicles are gaining popularity in the UK, and many EV owners are opting to charge their vehicles at home. While home EV charging is convenient and cost-effective, it’s crucial to prioritize safety.

In this blog post, they will explore essential guidelines for safe home EV charging, ensuring a secure charging experience for both them and their vehicle.

  • Choose a Certified Charger: Start by selecting a home EV charger that is certified and compliant with relevant safety standards. For instance, ProjectEV and EVIQ. Look for chargers that bear the CE mark or are certified by organizations such as the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) or UL (Underwriters Laboratories).
  • Hire a Professional Electrician: Unless they are a qualified electrician themselves, it’s strongly recommended to hire a professional electrician for the installation of the home EV charger. They will ensure that the wiring, connections, and electrical system are installed correctly and meet safety regulations.
  • Install a Dedicated Circuit: To prevent overloading the existing electrical circuits, have a dedicated circuit installed for the EV charger. This circuit should be properly sized to handle the charging demands of the vehicle and equipped with appropriate circuit breakers or fuses. They can also use the Installer Miles app for installing their charger.
  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI): Install a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) or Residual Current Device (RCD) to protect against electric shocks. These devices monitor the flow of electricity and quickly shut off power if a ground fault or current leakage is detected.
  • Outdoor Charging Considerations: If they plan to charge their EV outdoors, ensure that the charging equipment is designed for outdoor use and is protected from water, extreme temperatures, and physical damage. Additionally, consider using a weatherproof cover for added protection.
  • Regular Maintenance and Inspections: Regularly inspect the EV charger for any signs of damage, wear, or loose connections. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for maintenance and, if required, schedule professional inspections to ensure the charger is functioning safely. However, there are apps like the Electric Miles smart app that get them covered for all of these alerts and automated maintenance tasks.
  • Fire Safety Measures: To minimize fire risks, avoid charging the EV on combustible surfaces or near flammable materials. In case of a fire, have a fire extinguisher nearby and ensure that everyone in their household knows its location and how to use it safely.
  • Educate Family Members: Ensure that all members of the household are aware of the safety guidelines for EV charging. Teach them about the risks associated with tampering with charging equipment or using incompatible accessories.
  • Emergency Shutdown Procedures: Familiarize themselves with the emergency shutdown procedures for the EV charger. In case of an electrical fault or emergency, they should know how to safely and quickly shut off power to the charger.
  • Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions and guidelines specific to the EV charger. Each charger may have unique features or safety recommendations that should be followed for safe operation.

Safety should be the top priority when it comes to home EV charging. By following these essential guidelines, they can ensure a secure charging experience for themselves, their family, and the electric vehicle. Remember, if they have any doubts or concerns, consult a qualified electrician or contact the charger manufacturer for further assistance. Happy and safe charging!
