An alliance for sustainability has been formed in Dortmund: together with E.ON, the companies Deutsche Gasrußwerke and Coldstore Group as well as the City of Dortmund are pursuing innovative approaches to energy supply.
For these customers, E.ON developed a system that recycles excess heat from the Gasrußwerke plants and provides the deep-freeze logistics company Coldstore in the form of deep-freeze. The solution intelligently combines supply and demand and increases the attractiveness of the ‘Cleanport’ technology location at Dortmund's industrial harbor. The City of Dortmund supports the project.
Deep-freeze warehouse
At its core, E.ON is building an energy center with heat recovery that converts excess energy into useful energy. The energy is generated during the production of carbon black, which is produced by the Deutsche Gasrußwerke at their Dortmund location, primarily for the tire industry. Up to now, the energy has been sold to the municipal utilities of Dortmund or traded on the electricity exchange. The new concept now creates direct sales channels.
The City of Dortmund's innovation center aims to revitalize the industrial harbor and win innovative, climate-friendly companies for it. The first success is that the Coldstore Group wants to profit from the low-cost energy and, as part of this cooperation, will establish a location directly next to the gas soot plants, including a deep-freeze warehouse, which will create additional jobs in the region.

Hans Jansen, CEO of the Coldstore Group: “We are pleased to implement the Cleanport project together with the City of Dortmund, E.ON, and Deutsche Gasrußwerke. We will build a 5,000-ton freezer warehouse with a freezing capacity of 300 tons in 24 hours on the Dortmund site. The proximity to the port and the container terminal there, in particular, offers many opportunities for logistics.”
