The E.ON Board has decided to sign the Terra Carta, which was unveiled during the One Planet Summit in Paris, France.

The Terra Carta was initiated by HRH The Prince of Wales. He is calling on CEOs (Chief Executive Officers) from around the world to engage and play their part in leading the global transition towards a sustainable future.

Terra Carta or Earth Charter

The Terra Carta, or Earth Charter, derives its name from the 800-year-old Magna Carta in England

The Terra Carta, or Earth Charter, derives its name from the 800-year-old Magna Carta in England that first enshrined basic individual rights and opened the route towards democracy. The Terra Carta seeks to protect the world’s natural resources and accelerate the transition to a greener future.

It contains nearly 100 actions that businesses can take, including a commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 or sooner, and protecting natural ecosystems.

One of the initiatives arising out of the charter is a private sector alliance that aims to invest US$ 10 billion in ‘natural capital’.

Sustainable Market Initiative of the Terra Carta

In the Terra Carta’s statement of intent, the voluntary commitments include supporting international agreements on the climate, biodiversity and desertification, and make investment and financial flows consistent with a future of low greenhouse gas emissions.

Leonhard Birnbaum, Member of the E.ON Board of Directors, said “We take pride in supporting the Sustainable Market Initiative of the Terra Carta. We share the vision around the need to accelerate global progress towards a sustainable future. We are deeply convinced that we need to put Nature, People and Planet at the heart of future global value creation.

E.ON - a frontrunner towards sustainable development

E.ON sees itself as a frontrunner towards sustainable development

E.ON sees itself as a frontrunner towards sustainable development. Fighting climate change is at the heart of this belief. E.ON fully supports the EU’s climate targets and the commitment to the Paris Agreement, aiming to be carbon-neutral itself until 2040.

Together with around 150 other companies, E.ON called on the European Heads of State and Government in September 2020 to reduce national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030.

E.ON fully aligned with the new energy world

E.ON is fully aligned with the new energy world and has completely restructured its activities accordingly, over the last five years. E.ON enables decarbonization, decentralization and digitalization of energy supply. The company’s power grids are essential for the energy transition.

By connecting renewable energies to its networks, E.ON is contributing to avoid about 100 million tons of CO2. With its business unit for innovative customer solutions, E.ON enables its customers to consume less energy, be more energy efficient and achieve their own climate targets.

E.ON recognized for its measures to reduce emissions

Recently, E.ON has been included in the ‘A List’ of the not-for profit organization CDP for transparency and performance in climate protection. E.ON was recognized for its measures to reduce emissions, limit climate risks and develop a low-carbon economy.
