Axpo and Pilkington Automotive Finland Oy, part of the NSG Group, a global innovator in glass manufacturing, have signed a long-term wind energy power purchase agreement (PPA), the companies have announced.

The partnership is a significant step towards powering NSG Group’s plants in Finland with clean electricity and further demonstrates the commitment of both companies to sustainability.

Axpo and Pilkington Automotive Finland Oy partnership

Axpo will supply Pilkington Automotive Finland’s two manufacturing plants

Axpo will supply Pilkington Automotive Finland’s two manufacturing plants with an annual total of 35 GWh of wind-generated electricity from the Storbacken wind farm, located near the city of Vöyri in Finland, for eight years.

This significant infusion of renewable electricity underscores NSG Group's unwavering commitment to reducing the company’s carbon footprint and embracing sustainability in its operations.

Long-term wind energy power purchase agreement signed

Axpo Sverige AB Originator - David Eickhoff said: “This PPA was developed during a time when signing long-term agreements was becoming increasingly difficult. It demonstrates that, even in such a challenging environment, we can successfully help our clients reach their sustainability targets, by leveraging Axpo’s expertise and knowledge of the market.

Pilkington Automotive Finland Oy Managing Director - Jussi Parkkali said: “We are delighted to sign this long-term PPA with our partner Axpo Nordic to secure renewable electricity for our facilities in Finland. Securing fixed prices for zero-carbon electricity, especially during a time of such volatility, will support our customers and be a huge step towards our sustainability objectives.

Accelerate transition towards cleaner energy sources

The PPA will contribute not only to this target, but the NSG Group’s 2030 science-based target

Together, the two companies aspire to set an example and accelerate the transition toward cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. NSG Group aims to source the equivalent of at least 50 per cent of its electricity (by kilowatt hour) from renewable sources by the end of the 2024 fiscal year.

The PPA will contribute not only to this target, but the NSG Group’s 2030 science-based target of reducing Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 30 per cent.

Axpo Nordic has facilitated several bespoke PPAs

Axpo Nordic is among the global marketers of wind and solar energy in the region, managing a portfolio of 27 TWh, mostly comprising wind energy. A market pioneer, Axpo Nordic concluded the very first PPA in the Nordic market in 2011.

Since then, the company has facilitated several bespoke PPAs and is now taking an active role in helping renewable developers and industrial partners achieve their important climate objectives.
