Alan Thomson has been appointed as Arup’s Global Energy Leader, with a focus on developing large-scale hydrogen, offshore wind and urban energy.

Alan, a qualified Engineer, has been with Arup for over 17 years and has led major projects, including advising the New Zealand government in its move to hydrogen energy.

Operation and asset extension

He has also led the analysis of decarbonizing pathways for the UK, aiming to understand the short, medium and long-term requirements for a net zero decarbonized future.

Arup’s blended energy team includes economists, behavioral scientists, engineers and sustainability consultants working together to bring about projects from financing and inception through to operation and asset extension and repurposing. Major projects include:

  • Supporting the UK government and The Crown Estate to understand the future of offshore wind through digital modelling and scenarios
  • Advising US states on the future of electrified transport fleets including the deployment of solar charging for electric buses in Massachusetts
  • Undertaking studies for the Western Australian Government to explore the future of green hydrogen across the region.

Sustainable energy supply

Far more players are now involved in the energy space and are looking for guidance"

Alan Thomson says: “Far more players are now involved in the energy space and are looking for guidance on how to secure their own resilient and sustainable energy supply. We’re increasingly working with everyone from tech giants to city mayors – alongside energy operators and asset owners.”

To move to Net Zero and to secure energy for a growing population requires more joined up thinking than ever before. Our strength is the ability to draw on experts from across the company – from city planners, to data scientists and economists, to give the best possible integrated system solutions.”

Alan is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is also the Industrial Co-chair of the Energy Research Partnership (ERP) and Advisory Group Member of the Prospering from the Energy Revolution program and a visiting advisor to organizations including the World Energy Council.
