Ameren Missouri’s Callaway Energy Center in Fulton, Missouri, USA, has completed its 25th planned refueling and maintenance outage, and resumed generating carbon-free energy for customers.

During the outage, Ameren Missouri co-workers and specialty crews safely completed more than 9,000 refueling and maintenance job tasks.

Refueling completed for Callaway Energy Center

The main task of each refueling outage is to load new fuel for the reactor

The refueling was completed safely and the Callaway Energy Center is playing a key role in providing energy reliability to our customers,” said Fred Bianco, the Senior Director - Nuclear Operations at Ameren Missouri, adding “During the past several weeks, we used the opportunity to further improve the reliability of Callaway.

The main task of each refueling outage is to load new fuel for the reactor. Crews also used this time to perform additional upgrades and tests on the non-nuclear side of the energy center, including:

  • Upgrading critical machine controls.
  • Enhancing both primary and backup systems for increased reliability.
  • Testing and inspecting numerous systems, including electrical cables and piping.

Callaway Energy Center

The Callaway Energy Center, which generates approximately 25% of the energy for Ameren Missouri’s 1.2 million customers, undergoes refueling every 18 months. Approximately, one-third of Callaway’s fuel assemblies were replaced during the outage, at the 1,194-megawatt nuclear facility.

The ongoing, efficient operation of the Callaway Energy Center and Ameren Missouri’s other energy centers, are key to the company’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, while maintaining the reliable energy service customers depend on every day.
