In order to have a positive impact on the climate and the environment, citizens in many cities and municipalities are making various contributions through various projects.

From repairing cafés to food sharing, there are various measures that have a lasting impact on climate protection. With the Westenergie Climate Protection Prize, the energy service provider and infrastructure provider recognizes the commitment in its partner municipalities.

Resources and digitization

First place in Hamminkeln goes to the Wertherbruch school, which launched "Climate-Friendly Village School"

This year, first place in Hamminkeln goes to the Wertherbruch primary school, which launched the "Climate-Friendly Village School" project and has been pursuing the path of sustainability for three years.

This includes, for example, the conscious use of resources and the digitization of correspondence. "We also sensitize children by addressing and actively tackling the topics of sustainability and climate protection in class and various projects all year round," said Barbara Fritzen, a teacher at the Wertherbruch primary school. The school can look forward to prize money of 1,250 euros.

Environmental and climate protection projects

"With the Westenergie Climate Protection Prize, we are pleased to support the environmental and climate protection projects in Hamminkeln and show what each of us can contribute," said Robert Graaf, 1st Deputy Mayor of the City of Hamminkeln.

"This has also been proven by the students of the Hamminkeln Municipal Comprehensive School, for whom the motto since spring has been "into the garbage bag and out of nature."

Democracy and values education

The idea came about during a project day on democracy and values education, after which the first collection campaign took place, which motivated the children to carry out various garbage collection campaigns in the city all year round.

With success: the students have so far removed over 20 kilograms of garbage and can now look forward to prize money of 750 euros.

Strengthening regional protection

Strengthening regional environmental and climate protection can only be achieved jointly

"The children's commitment shows that everyone can make a contribution - no matter how small - to making climate and environmental protection the focus of their everyday lives," said Dirk Krämer, Westenergie municipal manager.

A jury made up of representatives from the municipality and Westenergie AG will decide in advance which project will win from all applications received. Strengthening regional environmental and climate protection can only be achieved jointly.

Climate Protection Award

Since 1995, Westenergie and its partner municipalities in the supply area of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Rhineland-Palatinate have been making good ideas and exemplary actions from the local and regional environment visible to the public with the Climate Protection Award.

The climate protection award from the energy service provider and infrastructure provider thus also encourages others to follow suit and encourages people to take action themselves. Over 8,000 initiatives, projects and groups have received the award since it was launched.
