On June 28, 2021, The first batch of units of the Baihetan Hydropower Station on the Jinsha River completed the 72-hour trial operation and officially put into commercial operation, which is the world's largest hydropower project under construction with the highest single-unit capacity.

Baihetan Hydropower Station is the second stage of four giant cascade hydropower stations (namely Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu, and Xiangjiaba) in the lower reaches of Jinsha River. It is a major national project of "Power transmission from West to East".
The hydropower station plans to install 16 sets of 1 GW water turbine generators with a total installed capacity of 16 GW. After the completion of the project, the annual power generation will reach more than 62 TWh, which will become the second largest hydropower station in the world after the Three Gorges hydropower station.
