A total of 188 Evolume pole luminaires have been equipped with e-Sense Motion in a breakthrough project undertaken in conjunction with the Swedish Transport Administration and Vattenfall energy providers.
This installation has provided presence detection exterior lighting along the route which links Gävle with the popular destination at Bönan and the growing suburb of Norrlandet.
Maximizing energy saving
Henrik Gidlund, a lighting specialist at the Swedish Transport Administration, had a clear vision of what the system had to provide. “It was incredibly important for us not to lose the security aspect, yet we also wanted to maximize the energy saving.”
To achieve this brief the system is set to 20 % of maximum strength when no one is present but once occupancy is detected the lighting goes up to 100 %.
Sensor-based luminaires
The sensors in the luminaires communicate using radio waves and light up in groups of seven at a time
The sensors in the luminaires communicate using radio waves and light up in groups of seven at a time in the direction and pace at which users are moving. Three luminaires in front and three behind, plus the luminaire level with users. After approximately two minutes, the light levels return to 20 %.
"For us, delivery reliability and efficient installation are crucial. Our installers were very happy that everything was pre-mounted and so easy to install. In addition, it is a huge benefit having Fagerhult’s technical expertise as a support, both in connection with the installation and during maintenance," said Mats Ingemarsson, Project manager at Vattenfall.
Light level transition
The transition between the dimmed and full illuminated levels is an essential part of the user experience.
“We commissioned the system to slowly blend between the different settings, over a 4–5 second period. Avoiding any sharp, fast, and disorientating changes to the light levels was important not only for the people using the space but also any residents nearby”, commented Henrik.
70% energy efficient
Installation in Gävle provides an improvement in the energy efficiency of 70 % as reducing the risk of light pollution
Many of the Swedish Transport Authorisation’s roads have a low degree of utilization, possibly lower than 10 %. The installation in Gävle provides an improvement in the energy efficiency of 70 % at the same time as reducing the risk of light pollution.
Henrik envisages great opportunities for making savings on a national scale.“But for us, it is extremely important that suppliers can offer an ‘open source’. For obvious reasons, we cannot tie ourselves into having only one supplier,” said Henrik Gidlund, lighting specialist at the Swedish Transport Administration.
e-Sense Motion app
The programming was done on-site using an e-Sense Motion app, run on a smartphone or tablet. The average programming time per luminaire was two minutes, which corresponds to 30 luminaires an hour.
The settings for presence and light strength and troubleshooting can subsequently be managed easily using the app.
