At Electric Ireland, they understand these are difficult times for their customers. One of their most frequently asked questions from customers is how to know if their bill is accurate.

There are supports in place to help with understanding energy bills and ensuring they are accurate. Most of these involve submitting own meter reading, and Electric Ireland have made it simpler than ever to submit their read in a way that suits them best.

Why is there a need to submit meter reading?

If the meter is not read by a technician, and users don’t submit their own read, this means the bill is based on an estimated usage reading. Should users receive an estimated reading and they are unsure if it is accurate or not, Electric Ireland recommends submitting accurate meter read within one week of receiving the bill. Electric Ireland, as a supplier, will then apply this submitted meter read to user’s next bill.

Submitting a meter read online

To submit a meter reading for electricity or gas online, simply log in to Your Account Online. All users will need are their login details for Your Account Online and their MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) or GPRN (Gas Point Reference Number), which they’ll find on their latest bill.

Submitting a meter read by phone

To submit a meter reading for electricity or gas over the phone, simply call on +1800 372 372. All users will need is their electricity meter reading, the name on the Electric Ireland bill and the account number on the bill.

Submit a meter read by text

Users can also text their electricity meter reading to 087 960 92 23. Simply send the reading in the format of the MPRN, followed by a space and then the meter reading. So, for example: 10009998888 31480.

It is important not to send more than one reading a day, as this could delay the bill. Perhaps users would prefer to say goodbye to bills altogether. They have a Smarter Pay As You Go option for customers who want to pay for electricity as they use it.

Smarter Pay As You Go (PAYG)

Say goodbye to bills and pay as on the go instead. Electric Ireland will give users a clever in-home monitor that provides them with instant control of their electricity usage, so that they can pay for electricity and gas as they are using it.

  • No more bills
  • Text in-home monitor to check balance in real time
  • Check carbon emissions with monitor
  • Benefit both the environment and pocket
  • Electric Ireland installs in-home monitor for free
  • Electric Ireland also gives €60 sign-up credit
  • Electric Ireland customers can sign up to Smarter PAYG

Spread the bill amount equally over 12 months

For a hassle-free billing option, users can spread their annual bill payments equally over 12 months

For a hassle-free billing option, users can spread their annual bill payments equally over 12 months, using their Equalizer option.

Users will pay the exact same amount of their electricity or gas bill every month through a fixed monthly direct debit payment, ensuring no more bill surprises.

Electric Ireland calculates the total electricity costs or total gas costs for the year, based on the following:

  • Users’ previous electricity and/or gas usage
  • Users’ electricity and/or gas price plan

Electric Ireland will also include a 10% contingency to allow for any electricity and/or gas price changes, changes in weather or other factors. Users’ monthly payment is this total divided by 12.

Payment Holiday option for one month

Users have the exclusive option of a Payment Holiday for one month

And it gets better. Users have the exclusive option of a Payment Holiday for one month, meaning they will foot the cost of the bill for one whole month of choosing. For those sign up to Equalizer, they will still receive their electricity and/or gas bill every 2 months, which will show their payments and the balance remaining on the bill.
